Susan Cahill
Volunteer Coordinator
Susan Cahill’s journey to Join Hands has been one of timing. As an accomplished prosecutor, family business owner, caregiver and volunteer, her collective life experiences have prepared her well for her role as Manager of Volunteer and Program Development. She officially joined the team in the summer of 2019, but was approached by director Sheila Burton several years prior. Her husband and children were already involved at Join Hands in mentorship roles, so she was well aware of the goodness the organization delivered to East St. Louis. When her schedule finally allowed, she knew Sheila’s call had to be answered. And voila, here she is!
Susan’s ability to multi-task, innovate, and model excellence stems from her heart for service. She learned from her parents and disabled sister that serving others is paramount to living a life of fulfillment. Her duties at Join Hands range from formal volunteer training, to reviewing legal documents, to writing grants and business procedures, to revising handbooks and bylaws. She enjoys the fact that her role is continually evolving as Join Hands moves toward the next level as a successful and vibrant non-profit. Now that she is involved in the inner workings of the organization, she is especially impressed by how much Join Hands does with so little. “It is truly amazing to see how much is accomplished here on a daily basis with such a modest budget. The work with our families, the encouragement provided to young people in their educational endeavors, the volunteer interactions, and the tangible results are incredible.” She also laughingly admits that she is grateful Sheila persisted in bringing her here.
Susan cherishes time with her husband and three children, many friends, reading about politics and listening to audio books. She also loves exploring St. Louis! She is a graduate of St. Louis University and the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Law.
